Hanger Clinic has announced that Courtney R., a Mooresville, North Carolina, restaurant worker, is the grand prize winner of its #AmputeeLifeHacks contest.
Hanger announced the winner in a live Facebook broadcast at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida. Courtney was one of more than 100 people with limb loss who entered the contest, which encouraged entrants to submit a short video with advice helping fellow amputees accomplish everyday tasks and activities.
Courtney’s submission, “How to bartend one-handed,” showed which tools she uses to open wine bottles and serve multiple glasses at once to guests at the restaurant where she works.
“I’ve been working at Jeffrey’s Restaurant in North Carolina for 8 years, and after suffering limb loss a year and a half ago, I had to figure out how to get back to doing what I loved,” she said in her submission video.

After announcing the contest in July, Hanger Clinic selected 10 finalists over the course of 3 months, the company said. The grand prize winner was chosen by the public during a 2-week voting period in late October.
As the grand prize winner, Courtney and a guest will receive a trip to Clearwater, Florida, to meet Winter, a bottlenose dolphin with a prosthetic tail. Winter was the subject of the book, “Dolphin Tale,” as well as the 2011 film of the same name and its sequel.
The event announcing the contest winner also featured David Yates, chief executive officer of Clearwater Marine Aquarium, as well as the co-developers of Winter’s prosthetic tail, Kevin Carroll, MS, CP, FAAOP, vice president of prosthetics for Hanger Clinic, and Dan Strzempka, area clinic manager for Hanger Clinic.
