The Department of Veterans Affairs will host the National Veterans Wheelchair Games from June 21 to 26 in Dallas. More than 600 of the best wheelchair athletes, all of whom are U.S. military veterans, will participate.
The games are part of the “Summer of Service,” the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)’s new initiative created to build on existing partnerships to increase the number of organizations and individuals assisting veterans.
“The Wheelchair Games is a great example of courage and athleticism,” Robert A. McDonald, VA secretary, said in a press release. “If you want to see grit, determination and some of the finest athletes on the planet, this week in Dallas is the place to do this. The veterans have overcome obstacles, they have trained, they have persevered and now they are ready to compete on the world’s stage.”
The Wheelchair Games are often the first exposure injured veterans have to wheelchair athletics. Veterans competing in the games come from all over the U.S., and some come from Great Britain.
