A SCRA research and development team was honored with a Przirembel Prize for Collaboration in Technology and Product Development for their work in creating durable and comfortable prosthetics and orthotics for wounded warriors under the Prosthetics and Orthotics Manufacturing Initiative, according to a press release.
The team, led by Chris Norfolk, PhD on behalf of the Office of the Secretary of Defense, improved the durability and comfort of prosthetics and orthotics for wounded warriors, resulting in lighter, more durable prosthetic sockets that can be produced quickly at a reduced cost.
The team members included Clemson University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Mentis Sciences Inc., SensorTech, Friddle’s Orthopedic Appliances, Porticos, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Scott Rigsby Foundation and many other national and government partners.
“SCRA is honored to receive this recognition for our prosthetics work,” Bill Mahoney, chief executive officer of SCRA, stated in the release. “This initiative has helped to advance the mobility and comfort of prosthetics for our men and women in uniform returning to duty and is a strong example of the collaborative innovations emerging from South Carolina that builds our knowledge economy.”
The Przirembel Prize was created to recognize collaborations across organizations in the Southeastern US that are significant to others outside of the region. The team was honored at the InnoVenture Conference in Greenville, S.C.
