ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Patients with K2 unilateral transtibial amputations can benefit from K3 prosthetic feet, said Sarah M. Caragian, ATC, and Brittany M. Moores, both master’s of prosthetics and orthotics students at the University of Hartford.
Speaking on a poster presentation by students at the University of Hartford during the New Jersey Chapter of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists Annual Meeting, Caragian and Moores said their planned study will examine patients with K2 unilateral transtibial amputations using various kinds of K3 prosthetic feet. According to Moores, previous studies have shown that technologically advanced feet can help K2 amputees better function “at a higher level.”
“The big picture we want people to take home from this, once we do carry out our research, because we haven’t yet — we need to get our donations for feet and all that — we’d love for insurance companies to recognize that our patients can benefit from these feet and hopefully cover these feet in the future,” Caragian added.
