The San Francisco Board of Supervisors recently commended Davis Foot Comfort Center, one of the last remaining custom therapeutic shoe facilities in the country, for 40 years of service.
Former Secretary of State George P. Schultz was present at the Oct. 3 meeting in San Francisco at which the facility’s owner, Arnie Davis, C.Ped, was honored, according to a press release.
The release noted that demand for contemporary, biomechanically-correct footwear is growing as baby boomers and others want to stay active despite painful foot issues. Davis Foot Comfort Center, also known as Davis Shoe Therapeutics, has clients from the U.S., as well as Guatemala, Scotland and Africa, according to the release.
“Shoes, unlike most other therapeutic appliances, are part of one’s normal attire,” Davis, a sculptor-turned-orthopedic shoemaker and pedorthist, said in the release. “People have social attitudes about footwear that connect to feelings of self-esteem and self-image, issues that need to be addressed when designing specialized footwear.”
