The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has announced it will award up to $8 million in grants to adaptive sports programs across the country that benefit disabled military service members and veterans.
According to a press release, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will distribute the grants to 96 national, regional and community programs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Approximately 10,000 veterans and services members will benefit, the VA said.
“We are honored to partner with so many organizations across the country to provide adaptive sports programs where our veterans live,” David J. Shulkin, MD, VA secretary, said in the release. “Adaptive sports provide opportunities for veterans, and empower them to believe in themselves and let go of what others see as limitations.”
According to the VA, grant recipients include national governing bodies that prepare athletes for Paralympic competition, as well as veteran service organizations, local municipalities and other community groups. Supported activities will include kayaking, sailing, cycling, skiing, equine therapy and equestrian sports.
