The board of directors for the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists has approved $14,000 in funding for O&P education initiatives, spearheaded by the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education.
According to a press release, the funds will support O&P education programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. These include master’s level O&P practitioner education programs, as well as courses for O&P assistants, pedorthists and technicians.
“It is critical to engage students in political activism early on in their careers,” Robin Seabrook, executive director of the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education, said in the release. “With support from organizations like the academy, we can help to ensure that patients will have vocal activists speaking to their interests in the future.”
The money also will help O&P master’s degree students attend the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association Policy Forum in 2018.
“Students are the future of our profession,” Alicia Davis, MPA, CPO, FAAOP(D), president of the board of directors for the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, said in the release. “The academy board is pleased to approve funding that will support education initiatives and help cultivate the next generation of O&P practitioners.”
