The National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education has announced Rachael E. Rosen as the 2017 recipient of the Larry Lange Travel Fellowship Award.
According to a press release from the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE), the fund was established in 2007 in memory of Larry Lange, CPO, FAAOP, to provide individuals beginning their O&P careers with an opportunity to enrich their education and professional development in an aspect of O&P care. The $2,000 award funds travel and meeting registration fees for professional O&P conferences and activities.
Rosen is an orthotist practitioner resident at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She has created an evaluation protocol, as well family and patient materials, for patients with scoliosis treated with thoracic lumbar sacral orthosis (TLSO) braces (Providence, Boston and Charleston styles). She has made a grand rounds presentation titled, “Scoliosis: The orthotists’ perspective.” She also was the lead investigator of a retrospective study titled “The effect of body mass index on in-brace correction obtained by a Boston-style scoliosis TLSO in patients diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.”
Rosen also has focused on mentoring young women, especially in the O&P field. She is a mentor for a “Women in S.T.E.M.” program at a charter school. She plans to continue orthotic scoliosis research after her residency, according to the release.
Lange, who dedicated more than 27 years to the O&P profession, “believed in furthering one’s education as evidenced by his pursuit and attainment of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists Fellow designation,” according to the release.
