The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation recently announced four grant recipients as part of more than $800,000 in Quality of Life grants it has awarded this year.
The grants support fellow nonprofits that “foster community engagement, enhance independence and promote healthy esteem,” according to a press release from the foundation.
Grants have been given to the following projects:
- The Miracle League of North Mankato, Minnesota, which received a $15,314 grant to support the Fallenstein Playground. The playground is slated to be an inclusive space for children and adults with abilities. The funds be used toward the playground design and purchase and installation of the SwayFun Glider;
- Ramp Access Made Possible by Students (RAMPS) in Richmond, Virginia, which received a $10,000 grant. The community service organization involves high school volunteers who build modular wheel chair ramps for people with mobility impairments and older people who cannot afford ramps. RAMPS is affiliated with the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System’s Spinal Court Injury and Neuroscience units;
- Destination Rehab in Bend, Oregon, which received a $6,520 grant to support Adventure Rehab Camp. The camp is a 5-day “rehab adventure vacation” for people who are paralyzed and that person’s family member or caregiver. The funds will support the staffing of the camp, as well as van rental accommodations and travel for recruitment efforts; and
- The Independent Living Center of Kern County, Troy, New York, which received a $13,000 grant. It will be used to support the Repair and Re-Use Project, which accepts donated power wheelchairs and refurbishes these for people with disabilities who are unable to financially obtain the equipment.
