The American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics has released its annual report for 2016, which includes statistics on certified individuals and accredited facilities.
There were 5,855 certified practitioners, 798 assistants, 594 technicians, 2,242 pedorthists, 1,280 orthotic fitters, 1,172 mastectomy fitters, 231 orthotic-mastectomy fitters and 638 therapeutic shoe fitters, according to the report. A total of 340 practitioners were certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (ABC) in the year.
Among the accredited facilities in 2016, 63% specialized in orthotic, prosthetic and pedorthic services; 30% were pharmaceutical; 6% specialized in mastectomy; and 1% specialized in central fabrication.
Exam passing rates among candidates were as follows:
- Orthotic Practitioner Written Exam – 69%
- Orthotic Practitioner Written Simulation Exam – 76%
- Orthotic Practitioner CPM Exam – 71%
- Prosthetic Practitioner Written Exam – 75%
- Prosthetic Practitioner Written Simulation Exam – 79%
- Prosthetic Practitioner CPM – 75%
- Orthotic Assistant Exam – 100%
- Prosthetic Assistant Exam – 60%
- Orthotic Technician Exam – 60%
- Prosthetic Technician Exam – 65%
- Pedorthic Exam – 80%
- Orthotic Fitter Exam – 73%
- Mastectomy Fitter Exam – 98%; and
- Therapeutic Shoe Fitter Exam – 44%.
A total of 2,030 candidates were examined, according to ABC.
As part of ABC’s professional discipline program, nine individuals were sanctioned; four were issued cease and desist orders; and one was placed on probation.
