In recognition of Limb Loss Awareness Month, Ottobock HealthCare has announced it will support the Amputee Coalition throughout April in its efforts to educate the public and policy makers, as well as to celebrate the limb-loss and limb-differ communities, according to a press release.
“Ottobock is proud to partner with and support the efforts of the Amputee Coalition,” Matt Swiggum, regional chief executive officer of Ottobock HealthCare, said the release. “We encourage everyone to get involved and help amplify the voice of the limb loss community.”
According to the Amputee Coalition, 500 people in America undergo amputation each day. Of these, more than half are a result of vascular disease. In addition, more than 1,000 babies are born with a limb difference each year. By 2050, it is estimated that 3.6 million people in the United States will be living with limb loss.
To encourage people with limb loss and limb difference and their families and friends to advocate for the right to medically appropriate care, the Amputee Coalition has launched the Amplify campaign.
According to the coalition, the campaign aims to help those who need prosthetic care contact insurers; maximize support for the hashtags #LimbsAreNotALuxury and #AmplifyYourself on social media; and influence federal legislative policy and access to care.
Limb Loss Awareness Month will culminate with Hill Day activities on April 25-26 in Washington, D.C., where those impacted by insufficient access to care will meet with legislators about the need for comprehensive prosthetic services.
