The Orthotic and Prosthetic Activities Foundation hosted five First Clinics throughout the country on March 18, organized with the help from master-level O&P students from Eastern Michigan University and California State University, Dominguez Hills.
According to a press release, Eastern Michigan University (EMU) hosted the First Swim, First Dive Intro to Scuba and First Paddle clinics at the Jones Natatorium on campus. The events were sponsored by the University of Michigan O&P Center. According to the release, 2017 was the eighth consecutive year that EMU had hosted First Clinics.
California State University, Dominguez Hills hosted their inaugural First Clinics with First Fit, led by Nikki Hooks, CO, and First Swim with Brenda Gustin and Jim Fitzpatrick, CP. Both clinics were held at Backman High School in Irvine, California.
“The event was organized and well put together,” Matt Noel, a volunteer, said in a press release. “Instructors were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Time was adequate, but more time would have been nice. I learned a new technique to work out.”
