HOUSTON — The Association of Children’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics Annual Meeting began with a forum for sharing knowledge and new developments in research, equipment, observations and treatments for children and adolescents with limb deficiencies.
Jorge A. Fabregas, MD, president of the association, gave the opening remarks.
“This meeting will encourage and promote investigative endeavors and augment the education of personnel engaged in scientific endeavors related to the field of limb-deficient patients,” he said. “Our objectives [are] to provide a format that presents the best available clinical knowledge; examine the indications, techniques and results of various surgical procedures; examine new prosthetic-orthotic equipment; and present the latest in physical and occupational therapy, rehabilitation, adaptive equipment and techniques.”
The meeting, which was open to orthotists, prosthetists, orthopedic surgeons, pediatricians, rehabilitation physicians, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, educators and students, offered the opportunity for attendees to earn continuing education credits.
In addition, the meeting honored recipients of this year’s New Investigator Research Award. The Ottobock-sponsored award is presented each year to a student, resident or fellow for research and participation in the Association of Children’s Prosthetic-Orthotic Clinics.
Burhan Syed Dhar, CPO, of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, was awarded for research on the conversion of hip disarticulation into transfemoral amputation. Jessica McQuerry, MD, of Shriners Hospital for Children in Lexington, was awarded for research on the effect of amputation on quality of life and subjective function in children. – by Shawn M. Carter
