United States Congressman Ryan Costello (PA-06) recently visited Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics’ corporate office in Exton, Pa. According to a company statement, Costello met with Jeffrey M. Brandt, CPO, founder of Ability, and three below-knee amputee patients to discuss legislative bills H.R. 1530 and H.R. 5045.
H.R.1530, the Medicare Orthotics and Prosthetics Improvement Act, would advance accreditation, recognize certified O&P practitioners’ notes in the medical record, separate O&P from durable medical equipment and reaffirm the congressional definition of “minimal self-adjustment” in relation to orthoses. H.R. 5045, the Preserving Access to Modern Prosthetic Limbs Act of 2016, would place a moratorium on the implementation of the proposed Medicare local coverage determination (LCD) on lower limb prostheses until June 30, 2017, and require the HHS secretary and Medicare administrative contractors to remove the LCD from their websites until that date.
According to the statement, Ability hopes to gain Costello’s support to pass these bills, which could positively impact prosthetic care.
