The Amputee Coalition recently announced the election of Jeffrey J. Cain, MD, of Denver, and Lorraine Richie, MPA, of Gainesville, Va., to its board of directors. Cain is a family physician who teaches and practices at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and Richie is chief operating officer at the rehabilitation company PT Solutions.
In a press release from the Amputee Coalition, Susan Stout, Amputee Coalition president and chief executive officer, said Cain “brings to the table a wealth of experience as an amputee and physician.” She added, “We look forward to his perspective as we move forward in our 30th year as an organization. We have accomplished a great deal in our government advocacy and we look ahead for Jeff to guide us through new challenges.”
“As a physician and an amputee, I am anxious to contribute my working and practical knowledge of the challenges faced by the limb loss community,” Cain said in the release. “As a board and as an organization, we are dedicated to serving our constituents and to ensure that the Amputee Coalition is responsive to the needs of people already affected by limb loss and the 2 million Americans at risk. We have made much progress in our first 30 years, but with the rise of diabetes and vascular disease, we have many challenges ahead for our next 30 years.”
Cain is a bilateral transtibial amputee and award-winning athlete. He is a past board member of the Amputee Coalition and is the founding chair of the Amputee Coalition Advocacy Committee and the Medical Advisory Board. He is past president of the American Academy of Family Physicians and co-founder of Tar Wars, the national youth tobacco-free education program. Stout said of Richie, “Ms. Richie brings both a clinical and operational perspective from a variety of health care settings, including acute care, ambulatory- and community-based arenas. We are pleased to draw on her wealth of experience.”
Richie said, “With management and a clinical background, I feel I can bring some firsthand knowledge on the challenges and opportunities facing our consistency. Serving on the Amputee Coalition board, with whom I have been associated for many years, is an honor for me and a chance to give back to an organization that gives so much to adults and children with limb loss throughout the country.”
Richie founded Physiotherapy Associates and has served as a Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities surveyor in medical rehabilitation for more than 16 years. She holds a master’s degree in public administration from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.; a bachelor’s degree in medical rehabilitation with a concentration in physical therapy from the University of Manitoba in Manitoba, Canada; and a diploma in medical diagnosis and therapy from McKenzie Institute International.
