Zimmer Biomet Holdings Inc. recently announced it has completed the acquisition of Ortho Transmission LLC, including the company’s transcutaneous osseous integrated skeletal implant technology. According to a press release, the technology complements Zimmer Biomet’s collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to develop a transcutaneous system for anchoring prostheses in.
The transcutaneous system would eliminate the skin-to-socket interface, allow amputees to avoid skin irritation, sores, infections and joint pain caused by prosthetic complications, according to the release.
“Transcutaneous osseous integrated technology represents a fundamental innovation in limb replacement and Zimmer Biomet is proud to leverage our musculoskeletal expertise to significantly improve the quality of life of amputee patients living in the United States and around the world,” Todd Davis, vice president and general manager of Zimmer Biomet, said in the release.
Zimmer Biomet plans to begin clinical trials of its transcutaneous system using the new technology. Ortho Transmission already has conducted 10 years of pre-clinical research, animal studies and human biomechanical analysis on its implant.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
