Liberating Technologies, a College Park Company, recently announced it was awarded five new government grants for a total of approximately $3.3 million.
According to a company press release, the grants are funded through the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research; two Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program initiatives, the Defense Health Program Small Business Innovative Research and the Orthotics and Prosthetics Outcomes Research Program; and two NIH programs, the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research.
Through the grants, Liberating Technologies will develop a device to improve blood flow in residual limbs to prevent additional amputations, a powered hand orthosis, new technologies to train upper-limb myoelectric prosthesis users, and a system to obtain quantitative outcome measures to optimize lower-limb prosthesis balance and dynamic function.
