Motion Control, a division of Fillauer, recently announced it received a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to fund the development of a new Electric Terminal Device and wrist system for upper limb amputees. The grant is part of the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program.
According to a company press release, Motion Control was chosen for the project due to its experience with upper extremity prosthetics. The device is in field trials.
The Electric Terminal Device (ETD) resists water, dirt, dust and grease, and the latest version has been upgraded with a shorter, lighter forearm section and series of modular wrist joints. The second-generation device, the ETD2, has interchangeable components to allow for personalization.
Motion Control also received funding from the Joint Warfighter Medical Research Program to develop a rugged elbow system for use with the ETD2. More information is available through at http://cdmrp.army.mil/prorp/research_highlights/16sears_highlight.shtml.
