“I owe my predecessor, former executive director Homer Townsend Jr., a debt of gratitude for his mentorship and dedicated service to Paralyzed Veterans of America,” Gillums said in a press release. “He has established a foundation upon which I hope to build as we continue our mission of positively impacting the lives of veterans, their families and caregivers. This year, as our country prepares to elect new leaders and the Department of Veterans Affairs continues its evolution, we will ensure the voices of those with the greatest needs are heard loud and clear.”

According to the press release, Gilliums has held many positions within the Paralyzed Veterans of America since 2011. He served as associate executive director that year and served as deputy executive director in 2014. In that position, he reportedly increased the organization’s public profile and innovated many Paralyzed Veterans’ programs to better serve veterans, dependents, survivors and caregivers. He also was part of the Federal Advisory Committee for Prosthetics & Special Disabilities and the Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program.
