The Amputee Coalition recently announced a record 115 campers will attend the 2015 Paddy Rossbach Youth Camp, a traditional summer camp experience for children between the ages of 10 years and 17 years who were born with limb difference or have undergone amputation. The length of the camp has also been extended by one day.
The camp is expanding thanks to the organization’s sponsors, according to Susan Stout, the Amputee Coalition’s president and CEO.
“We sincerely thank our sponsors and major donors who have generously provided us with financial and other support,” Stout said in a press release. “This year, we are able to accommodate more campers than ever before. This is wonderful news for our campers, who receive so much benefit from the camp.”
Sponsors include Hanger Clinic; Freedom Innovations; Össur; Ottobock; Ability Dynamics; BiOM Personal Bionics; College Park Industries; Fillauer; WillowWood; Thorlo; the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics; the Board of Certification/Accreditation; and Scheck & Siress. Major donors include Cincinnati Dreams Come True, the Jordan Thomas Foundation and Lizbeth Thomas.
This year’s camp will be held from July 10-15 at Joy Outdoor Education Center in Clarksville, Ohio. All expenses, including airfare, are covered for the campers. The camp offers a full range of activities, including fishing, swimming, arts and crafts, zip lining, canoeing, sitting volleyball, hiking, a high ropes course, dance and archery.
Many of the children who attend camp have never even seen another child with limb loss. Laura Freeman, who has been a camp counselor for 11 years, described the camp as “a life-changing experience for a child with limb loss.”
