The American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association has announced the contenders for the 2015 Fall Thranhardt Award.
The award was founded through a gift from J.E. Hanger in memory of Howard R. Thranhardt, CP, in 1996. Contenders will present their research at the American Orthotic & Prosthetic Association (AOPA)’s 2015 National Assembly in San Antonio, on Oct. 8, 2015.
The contenders are Elizabeth Russell Esposito, PhD; J. Megan Sions, PhD, DPT, PT, OCS; Megan Tang, MS; and Art Shea, CPO, according to a press release.

Esposito, a researcher at the Center for the Intrepid at Brooke Army Medical Center, specializes in lower extremity biomechanics with a focus on prosthetic technology and secondary injury prevention. She will present research titled, “Can Individuals with Transtibial Amputation Reduce the Metabolic Demand of Walking Using Real-time Visual Feedback?”
Sions specializes in the evaluation and treatment of muscle and joint dysfunction and vestibular disorders, with a special interest in the management of spinal pain and disorders. Her presentation is titled, “Balance-Confidence May Help Explain Physical Function and Community-Integration among Individuals with Unilateral Transfemoral and Transtibial Amputations.”
Tang, an orthotic resident at the University of Michigan’s Orthotics and Prosthetics Center, is working with the University of Michigan’s Brachial Plexus Program examining cranial asymmetries in the Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy population. She graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology in 2014 with a Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics. Her presentation is called, “High Prevalence of Cranial Asymmetry May Exist in Infants with Neonatal Brachial Plexus Palsy.”
Shea holds 23 years of experience in O&P. He has worked with New England O&P Systems for 13 years. He will present, “Immediate Postoperative Prosthesis, a Comparative Analysis.”
