Study aims to reduce symptoms of residual, phantom limb pain

Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital has launched a study of cryoablation therapy, a minimally invasive investigational treatment, to relieve symptoms for amputees with residual and phantom limb pain.

J. David Prolongo, MD, interventional radiologist and principal investigator of the study, will use CT imaging guidance to place a probe near the nerve responsible for the phantom pain. The temperature is then dropped for 25 minutes to create an ablation zone which shuts down signals carried by the nerve. The process takes about an hour.
