Researchers have identified factors that can predict the success or failure of post-amputation limb salvage for diabetic foot patients, according to results published in BMC Surgery.
The study evaluated 154 patients who underwent limb salvage surgery for distal diabetic foot gangrene. Patients were categorized into two groups identified by primary success of limb salvage or failure to heal after limb salvage. The 5-year survival rate was 81.6% for the limb salvage success group and 36.4% for the limb salvage failure group.
A retrospective chart review showed the following factors had a significant association with the success or failure of limb salvage: underlying renal disease, limited activity before surgery, a high white blood cell count, a high C-reactive protein level and damage to two or more vessels on preoperative CT angiogram.
