The nation’s first foot drop team has assembled to help facilitate and document ongoing foot drop research in partnership with orthotist, Vincent DeCataldo, BOCPO, NJ, LPO. Team members will also participate in the 2014 Novant Health Thunder Road Marathon on Nov. 15.
The 11 members of Allard USA’s TeamUP face limited mobility in one or both of their legs as the result of foot drop, defined by the Mayo Clinic as difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. They’re able to walk, bike and even run with the help of a technologically advanced, carbon fiber orthotic device, according to an Allard USA press release.
One of TeamUp’s newest members, Jamie Whitmore, is a 37-time XTERRA winner. Despite being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 31, which resulted in foot drop, Whitmore continues to win competitions and was honored with an ESPY Award this year for Best Female Athlete with a Disability, according to the release.
TeamUP members’ participation in public education efforts and athletic events with a goal of helping others find their personal solution to regained mobility.
