Inventor Dean Kamen has been chosen as a recipient of the 2015 Lincoln Awards, presented by The Friars Foundation, the charitable arm of the Friars Club. Kamen will receive the Medical and Science Award for outstanding service to veterans by a member of the medical or scientific community.
Kamen is the founder of DEKA Research & Development Corporation and holds more than 440 U.S. and international patents. According to a press release, he “has revolutionized the world of prosthetics with his bionic arm invention.” The “Luke” DEKA Arm is intended to restore functionality for upper extremity amputees, and is, according to the release, “one of the most advanced robotic prostheses ever built … already improving the quality of life for our nation’s wounded warriors.”
“We are incredibly proud to honor this exceptional group,” Tommy Sowers, PhD, visiting faculty at Duke University and founder and event chairman for The Lincoln Awards, stated in the release. “Thanks to the tireless work of our selection committee and our honorees, we can shine a light on the very best of the broad American community supporting veterans and the military family.”
The Lincoln Awards: A Concert for Veterans & the Military Family will take place over the course of 2 days, with honors awarded in 10 categories at a special ceremony on Jan. 6, 2015 and an All-Star concert on Jan. 7 at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts Concert Hall.
