An English charity’s donation of 60 million pounds, or approximately $95 million, is funding a 20-year research program aimed at providing the re-engineering of biological replacement limbs. The program is called RESOLVE: Regenerative Medicine Solutions for the Victims of Landmine Explosions.
Find A Better Way, which was founded in 2011 by Manchester United soccer legend Sir Bobby Charlton to reduce the tragedies caused by landmines, has partnered with Imperial College London and Georgia Tech to perform the study. Researchers will use stem cell technology to join artificial joint tissue, including bones and cartilage, loaded with regenerative agents, with amputees’ remaining tissue and muscle.
Charlton hopes the project will “transform the lives of those living with the devastating effects of landmine trauma,” according to a press release.
