The Amputee Coalition has formed a peer support affiliation agreement with St. Lawrence Rehabilitation Center in Lawrenceville, N.J. St. Lawrence is the 14th facility in the United States to join the initiative and will use Amputee Coalition materials to plan peer visitation and provide staff training for peer visitors.
“As a premier rehabilitation hospital, we not only provide outstanding medical care, but also believe in ensuring that our patients and families have the emotional and practical support they need to deal with the physical challenges they face,” Kevin McGuigan, MD, medical director at for St. Lawrence, stated in a press release. “Our affiliation with the Amputee Coalition will help us provide that support to our patients and families who deal with amputations.”
“New amputees and their caregivers have questions and concerns that are best addressed by those who have personal experience. Our peer visitor program does just that,” Sue Stout, interim president and CEO of the Amputee Coalition, stated in the release. She added that the partnership allows the Amputee Coalition to “bring this initiative directly to the patient and their family.”
