The Amputee Coalition recently announced that three new members have joined its Scientific & Medical Advisory Committee. Deb Velez, BSN, MN, GNP, David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD and Carol A. Miller, PT, PhD, GCS, each will serve a 3-year term on the committee, which offers clinical and scientific expertise in the development, implementation and evaluation of Amputee Coalition programs, research and policy initiatives.
Velez will serve as the nursing representative on the committee, Armstrong will serve as the podiatry representative, and Miller will serve as the physical therapy/rehabilitation representative. Departing members of the committee are: Steve Wegener, PhD, Robert Gailey, PhD, PT, and Nancy Payne, MSN, RN.
“I would like to thank our outgoing members of the Scientific & Medical Advisory Committee (SciMAC) Committee for their dedication and the many years of service they have given to the limb loss community and our organization,” Sue Stout, interim president and CEO of the Amputee Coalition, stated in a press release. “At the same time, I would like to welcome the new members. We appreciate their sharing their experience and expertise to help our constituents.”
Velez is currently the PAVE (Prevention of Amputation in Veterans Everywhere) coordinator at the VA San Diego Healthcare System in La Jolla, California, and has more than 40 years of nursing experience.
Armstrong is a professor of surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson, Ariz., and the founder and director of Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA).
Miller is the department head and professor of the doctorate program in physical therapy at the University of North Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga.
