Dean Kamen, PhD, founder of DEKA Research and Development Corp., was awarded the UBM Canon 2014 Medical Design Excellence Lifetime Achievement (MDEA) award.
Kamen holds more than 440 U.S. and foreign patents for medical devices, including the first wearable infusion pump and insulin pump for diabetics. He founded DEKA to develop inventions and conduct R&D for corporate clients.
Notably, DEKA developed the DEKA arm, a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency-funded robotic upper limb prosthesis.
“I hope this award does not turn out to be the pinnacle of the work being done by anybody here at DEKA,” Kamen stated in a news release. “I hope it just incentivizes us to do more and better work in the future.”
Kamen will be acknowledged at the 2014 MDEA ceremony, held at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York on Wednesday, June 11 at 4 p.m.
