Amputee Coalition Youth Camp empowers adolescents

The Amputee Coalition Paddy Rossbach Youth Camp was held Saturday, July 20. Eighty-eight campers aged 10 to 17 years who live with limb loss or limb difference were expected to attend.

The 5-day summer camp offers a full range of activities, including fishing, swimming, zip lining, canoeing, theater, dance, archery and more. This year’s camp features a clinic in sitting volleyball by the USA Volleyball Team and a session on anti-bullying. Four US Paralympians will be on hand to instruct campers in volleyball, alpine skiing, para-swimming and cycling. Unaccompanied by their parents, campers are inspired to take on new challenges, be independent, test themselves and build new friendships.

“After seeing the difference the camp makes for children, many people have given generously and we are truly grateful. By working closely with children’s hospitals, industry partners, support groups, health care providers and other friends of the Amputee Coalition, 88 children will enjoy camp this summer,” Marshall J. Cohen, chairman of the Amputee Coalition’s board of directors, stated in a press release. “Parents report that their campers leave camp with higher self-esteem and more self-confidence, and that’s what it’s all about. Throughout the year, we hear that camp has been a life-changing experience for the children.”

The camp is held at the Joy Outdoor Education Center between Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio. All expenses and airfare are covered for the campers by the Amputee Coalition. To learn more about camp or to donate, visit www.amputee-coalition.org/events-programs/youth-camp.
