The US Senate confirmed Marilyn Tavenneras the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, according to a news release.
Tavenner received 91 of the 98 cast votes, making her the first confirmed administrator of CMS in 7 years. Before joining CMS as the principal deputy administrator, Tavenner worked at the Hospital Corporation of America and served as Virginia’s secretary of health and human resources. Most recently, Tavenner served as the acting administrator for CMS.
“This is a critical time to have someone with Ms. Tavenner’s extensive experience confirmed and in charge of Medicare and Medicaid,” Max Baucus, Senate finance committee chair, stated in the release. “We need a confirmed administrator to properly implement the Affordable Care Act and make sure it works as intended. I’m confident she has what it takes to strengthen our health programs for future generations.”
