Össur has added a portable compression device to expand its bracing and support line in the therapeutic market for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis. The device can be used in both in-patient and home settings to prevent deep vein thrombosis in patients with hip or knee joint replacements, according to a press release.
Forty percent to 60% of patients who undergo hip or knee joint replacements develop deep vein thrombosis (DVT) if they do not receive a compression device or medication for prevention, according to the release. Össur’s launch of its DVT mechanical compression system in the US later this year will help address the high incidence rates of DVT.
“Orthopedic surgery patients, particularly those undergoing knee and hip procedures, are considered especially high-risk for developing DVT,” Otto Fernandez, VP of sales and business development for bracing and supports at Össur Americas, said in the release. “This therapy, which can be used in pre-operative, intraoperative and post-rehab care settings, should help our customers and patients avoid a significant and potentially life-threatening medical condition.”
