ATLANTA — On March 26, the US Supreme Court will hear oral arguments regarding the constitutionality of certain aspects of the Affordable Care Act. At the heart of the debate are two key issues — the requirement for most Americans to carry health insurance and the expansion of Medicaid to cover all Americans who earn up to 133% of the poverty rate, forcing states to cover more people under the Medicaid program.
Peter Rosenstein, executive director of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, discussed the general health care climate on a national level as well as the implications of the Supreme Court’s possible decision regarding the future of the Affordable Care Act at the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium, here.
“A decision should come in June, which for the Supreme Court is really fast,” Rosenstein said.
Bruce “Mac” McClellan, CPO, LPO, FISPO, president of Prosthetic-Orthotic Associates, discussed the current political climate as it related to the everyday practice of O&P practitioners. McClellan discussed RAC audits and reiterated the importance of extensive and detailed documentation.
“You need to be sure your patients are being seen by the physician between the time you recommend a device and the time the doctor writes the prescription because if the physician does not take good notes on the visit, the device may not be covered,” McClellan said.
