The US Department of Health and Human Services’ National Institutes
of Health (NIH) announced that it will reward cooperative agreement grants for
the development of neural prosthetics.
The Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) hopes to stimulate applicants
to pursue translational and pilot clinical studies for neural prosthetics. This
program encourages milestone-driven projects such as implementation of clinical
prototype devices, preclinical safety and efficacy testing, design verification
and validation activities, pursuit of regulatory approval for clinical study
and proof-of-concept or pilot clinical studies.
Applications may be submitted as early as January 5, 2012. For entry to
the program, projects must have identified one or more clinically meaningful
device outcomes based on input from both clinicians and patients.
The number of awards is contingent upon NIH appropriations, and the
number of sufficient applications. Budgets for direct costs per year will
depend upon specific project requirements. The maximum direct costs for any
single year may not exceed $1 million.
