The US Olympic Committee (USOC) announced that the Warrior Games will be returning to Colorado Springs, Colo. in 2012. The games, designed for wounded service members and veterans, are presented by Deloitte and supported by the Department of Defense, US Department of Veterans Affairs, USO, Fisher House Foundation and Bob Woodruff Foundation. They will be held from April 30 to May 5, according to a press release.
The Warrior Games were created in 2010 as a way to introduce injured service members and veterans to Paralympic sports. More than 200 competitors are expected to participate in the seven sports — archery, cycling, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, track and field and wheelchair basketball. All eligible athletes will be chosen proportionately from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Special Operations based on their disability.
“We are excited to welcome our service members and veterans back to Colorado Springs for the third annual competition,” Scott Blackmun, CEO of the USOC, stated in the release. “These games truly exemplify the fighting spirit within each and every one of these athletes, all who have sacrificed for our great country.”
In 2011, the Marine Corps won the Chairman’s Cup, winning the most medals for a service branch, for the second year in a row.
