The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended the hepatitis B virus vaccine for adults with diabetes.
“With the information on the increased risk for hepatitis B among adults with diabetes, the working group considered the potential benefits that might be achieved by vaccination — how age of diabetes diagnosis may affect the proportion of those who would be protected by vaccination, and the cost effectiveness of vaccination related to age,” Trudy Murphy, MD, of the CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, said during the ACIP meeting today. “These considerations led to the formulation of the proposed recommendations.”
In a 12-2 vote, members of ACIP recommend the HBV vaccine to be administered to unvaccinated adults with diabetes who are younger than 60 years of age, and that HBV vaccination may be administered to unvaccinated adults with diabetes who are 60 years or older.
