The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced a list of six people for May’s Athlete of the Month Award, recognizing the best performances from the last month. Four of the candidates recently took part in the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester, Great Britain with three of them breaking world record. The public has until June 6 to choose their winner of the coveted title.
Danielle Brown of Great Britain was nominated by the International Archery Federation for finishing eighth in individual and ninth in the team event at the Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Porec, Croatia.
Saudi Arabia native Hani Alankhili received a nomination for setting a new World record with a distance of 31.29m at the BT Paralympic World Cup. For clocking 47.28 seconds for the 400m at the BT Paralympic World Cup, breaking his own T43 World record, Oscar Pistorius from South Africa received a nomination. He also ran the 100m in 11.04, the fastest time by any athlete in his class in 4 years.
Dan Greaves of Great Britain threw his discus 59.27m at the BT Paralympic World Cup, earning a nomination for athlete of the month. Greaves added nearly 30cm to his previous F44 world record set earlier this year at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships.
Kirsty Pond of Australia was nominated for winning four track gold medals at the Arafura Games and Great Britain Women’s Wheelchair Basketball team was also nominated after defeating Germany in the BT Paralympic World Cup final.
