Prosthetic & Orthotic Associates (POA) will be the sponsoring host of three First Clinics at the Amputee Coalition Conference in Kansas City, June 2-4, 2011. OPAF First Clinics are introductory adaptive recreational opportunities for amputees and those with physical challenges to try sports. OPAF hosts First Clinics across the country with the help of hosting sponsors such as POA. According to a press release, this will be the second time that POA has sponsored OPAF First Clinics at a national meeting.
First Climb, adaptive rock climbing, will premiere on Friday, June 3 at the Amputee Coalition meeting. First Climb will be led by amputee rock climber, Ronnie Dickson who will demonstrate and aid those who want to participate. First Climb will be held at Washington Square Park, directly across the street from the Westin Crown Center hotel, where the conference will be held. The event will run from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.
First Volley, the nationally recognized adaptive tennis program, will be held on Saturday morning, June 4, at the hotel tennis courts from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. There also will be an adaptive tennis session for wheelchair players on the outside decking just above the tennis courts. First Volley will be led by certified instructor, Stefan Blair, and assisted by the United States Tennis Association Missouri Valley staff and volunteers.
First Swim will be held at the hotel pool on Saturday afternoon from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. First Swim is geared toward amputees and offers techniques and aids to help them be comfortable both in and around the pool. First Swim will be led by Kansas City swim coach Maureen Nash and assisted by amputee triathlete Mabio Costa.
