The A Step Ahead for Amputees support/action group received a proclamation from the Pinellas County, Florida Board of County Commissioners proclaiming the month of April as Limb Loss Awareness Month.

“I was honored to see see that patients suffering from limb loss are getting recognized,” Jamie Kay Weil, MBA, founder of the support group, told O&P Business News.

A Step Ahead for Amputees hosted a program to introduce amputees and their families to the support group’s offerings. The kickoff event was held at Edward White Hospital on April 29 and featured remarks by Sheri Gruden, an amputee and A Step Ahead for Amputees participant, and Roland Metivier, chief executive officer of Edward White Hospital.

“We want to help the patients and their families with their anxiety and depression before surgery. We are also working with rehab facilities. We encourage the patients to tour the rehab and talk to the physical therapy staff. This way they have a comfort level in knowing where they are going to learn how to walk again,” Weil said.

A Step Ahead will follow the limb loss awareness month with several other events scheduled this summer.
