The International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) president Sir Philip Craven has promised an awe inspiring and spectacular showcase of sport when the Paralympic Games open in London in 500 days, according to a press release.
More than 4,200 athletes from 150 countries will participate in the London 2012 Paralympic Games, competing in 20 different sports.
And with more than 750,000 people so far registered to attend the Paralympic Games, Craven is confident spectators who secure a ticket will be treated to an event of a lifetime.
“I think those who have never seen a Paralympic Games before will be surprised and taken aback at the sheer quality of performances from the athletes,” Craven stated in a press release. “The Paralympic Games are an awe inspiring and spectacular showcase of sport featuring thousands of athletes from around the world. These Games are the pinnacle of an athlete’s career and all around the world they are training long hours each day in order to compete at the highest level next August and September.”
The last Paralympic Games took place in Beijing in 2008 and attracted 3,951 athletes from 146 countries. A total of 279 World records were broken by athletes during the 12 days of competition which were watched by a cumulated global TV audience of 3.8 billion people.
