In a joint effort, the York County Amputee Coalition and Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics Inc. have been collecting used prosthetic limbs for donation. These limbs will be distributed through the Physicians for Peace network of “Walking Free” partners in countries such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Philippines.
The donation drive in York, Pa. is the latest in a series of limb drives Ability has conducted this year. To date, more than 100 prosthetic limbs have been collected, with a value in excess of $750,000. Due to U.S. law, these limbs cannot be reused within the United States. Purchased new, the limbs would range in price from $6,000 to $20,000 each.
“Physicians for Peace is so thankful for the support of companies like Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics,” Brig. Gen. Ron Sconyers (USAF, Ret.), the president and chief executive officer of Physicians for Peace, stated in a press release. “Each patient who benefit from the gift of a prosthetic limb has a renewed opportunity for a productive life in school, on the job and with their families and friends. Each donation makes a world of difference.”
