After the Jan.12, 2010 earthquake devastated Haiti, Hanger Prosthetics
& Orthotics practice manager John “Jay” Tew, CP was instrumental
in establishing a prosthetics clinic in Haiti to treat those injured in the
earthquake. Serving as lead prosthetist for the Hanger Ivan R. Sabel
Foundation’s charitable efforts, Tew provided prosthetic care in Haiti
from February 2010 through May 2010 at the newly-established Hanger Clinic
located at the Hopital Albert Schweitzer (HAS), an undamaged local hospital
with a high clinical reputation in Deschapelles, Haiti.
On Jan. 5, 2011, Tew will return to the clinic where he will again serve
as lead practitioner and will restore mobility to the many Haitian amputees who
are still in need of prosthetic care.
Fully functional since Feb. 22, 2010, the Hanger Clinic in Haiti
achieved notable success and outstanding patient outcomes under the leadership
of Tew, providing prosthetic care to 300 Haitian amputees in 3 months.
Following Tew’s return to the States, two other Hanger practitioners
served as lead prosthetist including Anna Avakian, from Washington, D.C. and
Vern Hostetler from Zanesville, Ohio. To date, under the leadership of Tew,
Avakian, and Hostetler, the Hanger Clinic has provided prosthetic care to
nearly 700 Haitian amputees.
