Throughout September and October, OPAF has hosted events in New York, California, Illinois and Maryland.
McKeever’s First Ride, held on September 12 and sponsored by Touch Bionics, Engineered Silicone Products, LLC and Prosthetic Orthotic Associates of Middletown, New York, marked the second year the event was held at Winslow, an NAHRA (North American Handicapped Riders Association) barn. This was also the third First Ride event in the country in 2010. Seven participants attended including a group from the NYU Amputee Support Group in Manhattan, according to a press release.

Cascade Orthopedic Supply and Berke Prosthetics hosted a First Volley Adaptive Tennis Clinic at Alpine Hills Tennis & Swimming Club in Portola Valley, Calif. on September 18. The clinic was led by First Volley instructor and amputee tennis coach, Stan Backovsky and assisted by Alpine Hills director of tennis, Nigel Pugh. Five amputees attended the event and were put through their skills and drills, both in a group and one on one.
On September 24, Optech Orthotics & Prosthetics of Kankakee, Ill. hosted a First Swing/Learn to Golf Clinic at Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park, Ill. Optech had three participants who attended the 3-hour session along with volunteers, staff, family and friends. Clinic was led by National Amputee Golf Association First Swing instructors, Don Zommer and Bud Sanders and assisted by Silver Lake CC teaching professional, Gregg Tengerstrom and his staff.

Rounding out the busy OPAF calendar, Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics hosted a First Swim Clinic on October 9 at the pool facilities of Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md. Clinic was led by First Swim director, Jason Wening, CPO, a five time Paralympic Champion swimmer.
